deduct Assisted Living expenses
if there is assistance from the vet adm. can i still deduct the rest of the monthly cost.?
my mother is allowed to keep 200.00 of her social security and pension for her monthly expenses. the rest goes to the Assisted Living Facility along with a v a supplement payment. i pay the rest of her medical and personal expenses. can i deduct the Assisted Living Costs less what the v a supplements?
not exactly.
firstly, your mother would have to be a dependent under IRS rules. Since she doesn’t live with you, that means you have to provide over 1/2 her support. Her social security, pension, and the VA supplement count as support she provided. you’ll have to prove you provided more than that [over the course of the year] or she isn’t a dependent.
then comes the issue of medical expenses — a Schedule A [Itemized] deduction to the extent they exceed 7.5% of your AGI [and ONLY if you itemize]. read the IRS rules about care in an assisted living facility and what portion of the cost may be deductible. {I’m retired and don’t keep up with what I don’t need to know right now.} IF only a portion is deductible, you get your proportionate share based on the total cost and the portion you paid.
