Why does the United States make 21 the legal age for everything?

People always say that 18 is the legal age in the United States and 21 is only the legal age for drinking but, that’s not true. There’s so many things you need to be 21 for, not just 18.
Examples:
- Drinking
- When you’re with a 16 year old with a permit (who’s driving) and you have your license, you must be 21 to assist the person.
- You need to be 21 to go on websites for cigarettes (even though the smoking age is 18, but they’re thinking of making it 21)
- You have to be 21 (in Florida) to ride a motorcycle without a helmet.
- Gambling (in casinos)
and one time, I went to a steak restaurant California and they said I had to be 21 to enter (and the restaurant wasn’t even a bar)

and there are many other things but, those are the only one’s I can think of for now. It just confuses me because when I lived in Europe, they didn’t make 21 the legal age for anything. Once you were 18 over there, you were an adult who can do anything.

There are all kinds of laws concerning how old you need to be to do various things, not just in the US but all over the world. It’s not even universal in Europe either.

In some states you need to drive with somebody 21 or older with a permit, but not all. In some states you can get your full license at 15 with no restrictions. I did in North Dakota.

You don’t need to be 21 to gamble, you need to be 18. You can buy lottery tickets on your 18th birthday and I know many people who did. Casinos won’t let you in until you’re 21 though because casinos pass out free alcohol and they don’t want to be bothered checking ID once you’re on the gaming floor. Also 18 year olds tend to not have that much money to spend and make fools of themselves when drunk.

Clubs and private establishments have arbitrary age limits all the time. Some are 21 and up, some are 16 and up, even others won’t look at you unless you’re at least 25. There are developments where you can’t even buy a house unless you’re at least 55.
