Assisted Living executive director degree
Assisted Living Director?

Anyone have any insight on what I need to become an Executive Director in Kentucky for an Assisted Living Facility? I have worked in LTC and have a 4 year degree. I also have management experience. Just not sure how to get my foot in the door…

Not sure about KY. My stepmother is an AL Director. In our area, you must be licensed as a certified nursing home director to have this job. My stepmother also has a nursing background and years of working in the industry. She started out in marketing and went on from there. Marketing skills are essential. When I see ads for this job, they demand a solid marketing background. Since this is such a competitive industry, that makes sense. Management skills are also important.

You may want see if you can get into either a an AL center or nursing home in some kind of office job. Maybe you will have the best luck getting into either a small place or a nonprofit. That way, you can gain experience. I would also see if you could get certified, if that is required for your state.

If you cannot get into one of these places, try getting into marketing or some kind of a healthcare environment. I would focus on the marketing aspect, as that is what they want-at least the for-profit facilities. Something with lots of contact with people. You may have to take a low salary for any of these jobs, but the experience is crucial.
